These are some of the most popular resources that are almost imperative for every computer user.

Though some of you may be familiar with their function, a brief review is provided with each application and the download size is included alongside too.

An absolute must for every computer. Winzip compresses files for easy storage and transport. Conveniently compress files or folders by right clicking and selecting Add to Zip from the menu. Winzip 7.0 also offers the feature of prompting the user with the zipped file name (by default the same name as the folder or file) when attempting to zip (compress) a file or folder.

Most of you'll must be internet users and as such must often download files or programs from the internet. Ever been faced with the problem of getting disconnected when nearing completion of download of a large file ? Can you imagine downloading a 20MB file and when you have been connected continuously for 2 - 3 hours, waited patiently and downloading say 19.99 MB and then getting disconnected all of a sudden. Normally you would have to resume the download all over again right ? Well not necessarily if you have Get Right. This software allows you to start downloading a file, break your download at will and resume your download from the same point you left off the next time you reconnect.

Ever felt the need to keep your files or folders confidential because of sensitivity of matter or to keep others from going through and accidentally deleting your files ? The Magic Folders is the answer for you. This program hides selected files and folders on your system completely with password protection so that no one else but the password holder, may be able to unhide and use the files. If you forget your password your password it creates a rescue disk at install time itself so that your hidden files may not be lost in this event. Very effective indeed.

Almost all one of you'll must be having to maintain passwords for your Windows login, office computers, E-Mail accounts, ATM card numbers, Internet accounts or even magic folder. How in the world is it possible to remember all of those passwords ? If you are one of those people who has a photographic memory, good for you !!! I'm certainly not. So I find this application extremely useful. It helps you to organize your various passwords and store them in a file whose access itself is restricted by a password. I'm sure that remembering a single password is easier than all of the above right ?

Copying files on floppy for transporting data from one computer to another is standard practice. But have you ever been faced with a problem of having to copy a file larger than 1.44 MB on a 3½" floppy ? Well normally you wont be able to and Windows will display an error message saying that there is not enough space on the floppy. Don't fret. Download the File Split and easily split a file larger than 1.44 MB into smaller size chunks of 373 KB, 760 KB or 1.38 MB depending on your needs and then copy on the standard floppies and get going.

Do you need a good picture file viewer ? Download ACDSee and you've got yourself a great viewer. Supports all the popular file formats like jpeg, bmp, gif, animated gifs, tif, etc..

You may also try out Firehand Ember Ultra, one of my favourite picture file viewers these days. Same file support like ACDSee but offers thumbnail (view files in a small stamp size for easy preview) feature as well as well as full screen preview, slide-shows, smart stretch, etc…

If you surf the internet you may require the Real Player to view files of real media format (.rm or .ram format). The Real Player G2 is a far more advanced player with streaming video support (viewing motion files online), with links to loads of the greatest entertainment channels and equalizer for best possible sound quality. One great application to download.

If you're looking for a media viewer for all your possible file formats then the Windows Media Player is the player you're looking for. Best of all it registers all supported files with it and acts as the default viewer for them, so you can directly double-click them to open them.

Ever wanted to chat with friends and relatives abroad or anywhere around too without being bothered by the large crowds of people in chat rooms ? ICQ has the answer that you're looking for. If you haven't already downloaded this application, it's time you did. ICQ enables you to enjoy real-time chat at no extra cost. With features like searching for users online with the help of merely their E-Mail address, a list of favourite people you chat with and facility to send off-line messages and initiate chat, who can pass it up !!!

Chatting somehow doesn't somehow seem to be enough for all and I guess nothing beats a real time conversation. It gets the message through much faster. The Media Ring Talk telephony program is easy to use and facilitates you to converse with anyone you want to (who should have registered with Media Ring too). Requirements for this program are a sound card, mic, speakers and of course an internet connection. Configuration is simple; you'll be able to manage once you've downloaded the program.

If you feel that the Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the best thing to happen to the internet as far as browsers are concerned, then IE 5.0 is definitely for you. With all the features of IE 4.0 and additional features like it's auto-prompt feature that helps you fill those tiring and repetitive forms on various sites by prompting you with the appropriate entries, it's a great time saver. Also prompts you with site URLs and search text.

Not satisfied with Internet Explorer 5.0, then Netscape's got the browser for you. Download Netscape 4.7 and check out other great features like instant messaging services, web page composer and plug-ins for all the popular file and movie formats.

Shell account users can download the HyperTerminal Private Edition 4.0. Useful for file transfer among other usual uses.

If you've used Winzip before and have transported .zip files to another PC then you may have noticed the need for the target machine to have Winzip installed too right ? Well not necessary. The self extractor creates a self -supported independent zipped file so that it can be run on any machine with or without Winzip existing. For those of you who transport data frequently in compressed form to several machines, you'd probably want to try out this application too.

Did you like a particular scene from the Video CD you watched the other day and wished you could save it on your hard disk ? Well you can now. Download the Jiao Mpeg Player and cut clips from video-CDs at will. You will however have to register it if you want to cut clips more than 7 seconds which you obviously will. So download the register file too along with it and run the application from the zipped file to generate a registration code which you can then enter in the registration area.

This is probably one of the best anti-virus programs to date. The latest version 5 is out for download. Download it and keep running the program at least once a week. Better to be safe than sorry, right ? Also keep checking out the Symantec site for updates. I'll put them up when I get the chance.

For those interested in Web based animation, Flash 4.0 is an absolute must-have program. Used to create animation requring the popular Macromedia Flash Player which can be installed with IE5 or Netscape4.5. Meant mostly for web designers. I doubt a non-designer may be able to make much use of it.

Need to create great looking web pages ? Download the Macromedia Dreamweaver 2.0 now. Knowledge of HTML though is useful and a thorough understanding of Web Sites & Internet jargon is compulsory. Meant for the advanced web designer though. The nouveau designer can tinker with FrontPage Express which can be installed with IE5 or Netscape Composer which comes with Netscape 4.5.

If you're rather irked with the tedious process of copying files repetitively from folder to folder in Windows Explorer, then you've got to download the Windows Commander. It allows a 2 pane view of files and folders so you can directly copy from folder to folder by simply dragging from a folder in one pane and dropping in another.
