Set up a family trust - GDK MEMORIAL CHARITABLE TRUST in November, 1996 to purpetuate memories of father, late SHRI PANDURANG VAIJNATH GUPTE, an advocate of Baroda, father-in-law, late SHRI JAYWANTRAO RAJARAM DESHPANDE, a self made entrepreneur and founder of VASANT OPTICAL STORES of Nagpur and friend and mentor, late SHRI SHYAMKANT KRISHNA KEER, retired Senior General Manager of SICOM LTD.
The Trust has built up total corpus of Rs.35,26,767/- within a period of less than 10 years. It has donated a sum of Rs.2.25 lakhs to SHREE SAMARTHA VYAYAM MANDIR, Shivaji Park, Dadar, Mumbai for required facilities for gymnasts and instituted annual awards for excellence in physical education in the name of PROF. MANIKRAO EXCELLENCE AWARDS in memory of Shri Pandurang V. Gupte.
The Trust has been associated with coaching courses for UPSC examinations for entry to civil and defence services. For NDA coaching classes, an annual grant of Rs.25,000/- was given for two years to BHONSALA MILITARY SCHOOL of Nashik(Total grant: Rs.50,000/-). Similarly, an amount of Rs.7.85 lakhs is given toJNANA PRABODHINI On the 22nd June, 2002 an Argogya Upachar Kendra in memory of lateof Pune for computerised centres and libraries at 6 centres in Maharashtra. From 1999-2000, Jnana Prabodhini's Navanagar Vidyalaya (JPNV) at Nigdi near Pune has also been granted donations aggregating Rs.7.47 lakhs for programmes on physical education and for encouraging athletics/ gymnastics. Vyayamacharya Rajratna Prof.Manikrao(founder of renowned Jummadada Vyayam Mandir of Baroda) has been set up at the JPNV . It will look after and monitor the health of the students of the Kridakul at the JPNV.
Two annual awards of Rs.25,000/- each have been instituted for outstanding first generation entrepreneurs from small scale industries sector within the State of Maharashtra in memory of lateShri Jaywantrao R. Deshpande and late Shri Shyamkant K. Keer.
So far 8 Entrepreneurs have been honoured with total of Rs.2,00,000/- till the end of 31-3-2006 and two special awards of Rs.5,000/- each during the year 2001-02. The Trust had associated itself with theMaharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Aurangabad (MCED) to sponsor 8 Entrepreneurship Development Programmes(EDP) with contribution of Rs.25,000/- for each of the EDPs. The MCED has been set up by IDBI, ICICI, SICOM, MSFC - leading financing organisations in Maharashtra.
The Trust has now got associated withPRAHAAR Samaj Jagruti Sanstha, Nagpur (PRAHAAR) for setting up a hostel facility to train aspiring youngsters for entry to defence services under the aegis of GDK - PRAHAAR Defence Academy at Nagpur. PRAHAAR has been provided Rs.1,25,000/- till 31-3-2006 for the said Centre. The Trust is registered with the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra State and is also recognised by the Income-tax authorities. Presently application for renewal of tax exemption beyond 31-3-2006 under sec. 80-G of Income-tax for 50% exemption to donors is pending consideration.
