Mango Ripening (Ratnagiri Alphonso)
Fruit & vegetable storage:
In season, fruits are available in abundance. Some fruits can be stored for short periods whereas some could be stored for as many as 9 months.
Mango Storage:
In western India mango season starts from the month of January and extends to the beginning of the rainy season in Western India. Mangoes can be stored at lower temperatures for a period of 30 days. We use Controlled Atmosphere to store mangoes.
Experiments on Alphonso mangoes have yielded promising results, The coming season will help us in trying out more experiments and keeping mangoes fresh for a longer time.
Mango Ripening:
In most of the places in India mangoes
are ripened with Calcium Carbide. In fact it is surprising to see
that Mangoes meant for export too go through the same process. We have
perfected the art of ripening mangoes with ethylene gas which is a natural
plant hormone and is produced safely with our indigenously designed Ethylene
Generator. Last season in an experimental study at Ratnagiri, Alphonso
mangoes were taken for ripening at the end of the mango season when
mango prices drop due to the rains. After suitable treatment mangoes were
ripened with Ethylene. These mangoes ripened very well with a brix of 18
to 22. The blackening of mangoes due to fungal and other causes was totally
absent in the treated mangoes. Normally untreated mangoes after the rains
do not ripen at all, they just turn black. This is the reason for a
distress sale after the rains start at Ratnagiri.
