[SSC logo] Establishment of the Commission

The Government of India established a Subordinate Services Commission in November,1975. This Commission was subsequently renamed as Staff Selection Commission on September 26,1977. The Commission is an attached office of the Government of India, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

Functions

The Commission makes recruitment to non technical Group C and Group B non Gazetted posts (Assistants and Grade C Stenographers) in Ministries/Departments and the attached and Subordinate offices of the Government of India and the Audit and Accounts Department.

Set up of the Commission

The headquarters of the Commission is located at New Delhi. The Commission has Regional Offices at Allahabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati and Mumbai. It also has Sub-Regional Offices at Chandigarh and Raipur. Another Sub-Regional Office is being set up at Patna shortly. The Commission is headed by a Chairman who is assisted by two Members, a Secretary and other officers and staff. Shri B.K. Misra is the Chairman of the Commission. Shri R.K.Tandan and Shri Prakash Chander are the two Members and Shri Harcharanjit Singh is the Secretary. Each Regional Office is headed by a Regional Director and the Sub-Regional Office by a Deputy Director.

Publications [Lodestar]
The Commission publishes a quarterly journal named Lodestar (in English) and Dhruvtara (in Hindi).The journal provides basic guidance material for candidates. The journal is published in the months of January, April, July and October.
Copies of Lodestar/Dhruvtara can be had from our headquarters, Regional offices or Sub-Regional offices on payment of Rs.15/- in cash. Copies can also be obtained from the Editor,Lodestar, at our headquarters by post by sending a Demand Draft of Rs.15/- only in favour of Staff Selection Commission, New Delhi payable at New Delhi. For annual subscription, Demand Draft of Rs.60/- should be sent to our headquarters.
