Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disorder that affects about
1% of the population in the United States. The skin becomes
inflamed, producing red, thickened areas with silvery scales. It
occurs most commonly on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower
back. About 10% of patients with psoriasis have inflammation
of the joints, which causes psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriasis is not a contagious disease. It is a hyperproliferative
disease, meaning that the skin cells on the outer layer of the
skin reproduce more quickly than normal, which causes them
to accumulate on the surface of the skin. These skin cells
appear as large, silvery scales.
Who Does It Affect?
Psoriasis usually begins between the ages of 15 and 35 years,
but it can affect all age groups. Psoriasis is equally common in
men and women, and it is uncommon in blacks and American
Indians. It is common for psoriasis to run in families -
approximately one-third of patients with psoriasis have a
family member with the same condition.
What Causes Psoriasis?
The cause of psoriasis is unknown. Research suggests that
this skin condition may be caused by an immune system
(ability to fight disease) disorder. T cells, which are a type of
white blood cell, help protect the body against infection and
disease. It is thought that the immune system produces too
many T cells in patients with psoriasis. These T cells cause
inflammation and a higher rate of skin cell reproduction.
